What is an Exercise Physiologist?

Exercise Physiologists are recognized allied health professionals who specialize in the field of sport, exercise science and rehabilitation and are accredited by the Australian Association of Exercise and Sports Science (AAESS). Exercise Physiologists work alongside other allied health and medical practitioners to design, lead and evaluate exercise programs for the treatment and prevention of acute and chronic injury and / or illness, as well as developing exercise programs to improve an individuals general health & fitness, or to achieve a specific goal.

Do I need a Doctors Referral?

It depends on your treatment requirements and current health status. The first step is to book in for your FREE 30 minute health appraisal and goal setting session. You do not need a referral for this session as the aim is for your Exercise Physiologist to determine your current health status and fitness needs to establish whether or not you will require medical clearance or referral to participate in further exercise. Most people won't need a referral from their doctor, however, if you are claiming services under Medicare, Workers compensation, Veterans affairs or have a chronic injury, illness or disease you will most likely need to see your doctor before you start your program.

What is the Difference Between an Exercise Physiologist and a Personal Trainer?

Whilst Personal Trainers are qualified to work with "healthy" populations (i.e. anyone free from injury or illness), they do not have the background to train individuals with the aforementioned conditions. In some cases inadequate training may lead to inappropriate healing or further exacerbation of a person's injury or condition.

On the other hand, research has shown that appropriate supervision and treatment under the care of an Exercise Physiologist will lead to vast improvements in the healing process and recovery of these conditions, as well as being a proven way of decreasing the likelihood of injury / illness in healthy individuals.

What conditions can an Exercise Physiologist help with?

Exercise physiologists work with people who have conditions that respond positively to exercise which may include:

  • musculoskeletal conditions (i.e. arthritis, osteoporosis, sprains/strains, back injuries)
  • cardiorespiratory conditions (i.e. heart disease, asthma, hypertension)
  • neurological conditions (i.e. multiple sclerosis, parkinson’s disease)
  • metabolic conditions (i.e. obesity, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome)

An exercise physiologist’s niche is to condition people through holistic exercise to a level of functioning that will benefit them in terms of work, sport, recreation and general lifestyle.

What do I need to bring to my sessions?

All you need is to bring along yourself, wear anything that you feel comfortable moving in and any relevant doctors referrals or background information.

How much do the sessions cost?

Your first 30 minute consultation will be FREE. From there you will sit down with your Exercise Physiologist to determine your goals and the best method to suit your needs, and we will discuss the difference prices accordingly. If you are receiving treatment under Veteran's Affairs, Workers compensation or Medicare there will be no out of pocket expenses. If you have private health insurance, you may also be able to receive a rebate back from your consultation.

Dr Matt Asks some important questions of interest to Mentone and Bayside residents - Chiropractor Mentone and Bayside Dr Matt Asks...

Can chiropractic cure a child's ear infections?
Chiropractic isn't a cure for anything. Nor is it a treatment for ear infections. However, many children who suffer with ear infections also suffer from spinal problems in their neck, compromising nerves to the ear, depressing the immune system and preventing proper drainage. Can chiropractic help? Find out!
What's the difference between a "good" drug and a "bad" drug?
As a chiropractor, I see the use of many drugs (legal or illegal) as merely symptom treating. Worse, virtually every drug produces unwanted effects. The effects of chiropractic are largely positive effects. If you're a Mentone and Bayside parent, consider carefully before giving your child a cough medication, cold remedy or pain reliever so this sort of question doesn't arise in the first place.
